First-timer guide
Is Akumal Worth It? An Honest Guide for First-Timers
A calm bay known for sea turtles, not a party town. Here is who will love it, who will not, and how to spend 1 day or 2-3 days there.
Short answer
Yes, if you want the sea and a slow pace
Akumal is a small beach town on the Riviera Maya, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is built around one calm, shallow bay where wild sea turtles feed on seagrass. That is the reason most people come, and it is a good reason.
It is not a nightlife destination and it is not a place where you will have a wide empty beach to yourself in high season. If that is what you are picturing, read the next section before you book.
Who is it for?
Who Akumal is for, and who should skip it
Honest list, so you do not arrive with the wrong expectations.
- Yes, for families: the bay is shallow and calm, and on our guided turtle snorkel babies 0-2 go free and kids 3-5 have their own rate, always with an adult 18+ and a life jacket. See Akumal with kids.
- Yes, for turtle lovers: the bay is a place where turtles are often seen, but they are wild animals and nobody can promise a sighting. Our guided hour includes up to 20 extra minutes of searching if you have not seen one.
- Yes, for quiet travelers: small town, relaxed rhythm, easy to combine with cenotes and a lagoon.
- Not for party seekers: if you want clubs, beach parties and a big nightlife scene, Playa del Carmen or Tulum fit better. Akumal is quiet in the evening.
- Not for empty beaches in high season: the main beach and the turtle area get busy around midday in peak months. Go early or pick a guided slot at the start of the day.
- Not for guaranteed postcard days: sargassum, wind and rain change from year to year and month to month. Plan a flexible day.
1 day

2-3 days
What to do in Akumal in 2-3 days
With more time you can spread the water, the jungle and the cenotes, and never rush.
- Day 1, turtles: the turtle snorkel in the morning, easy afternoon.
- Day 2, lagoon and cenotes: Yal-Kú lagoon (from $67 per adult, 1 h 30 of guided snorkel), or the turtles + Dos Ojos cenote + Bat Cave from $112 per person, or the 3-cenote circuit from $79 per person. The two cenote tours need your own car or private transport.
- Day 3, adventure or sea: turtles + ATVs + Cenote Alux + zip lines from $151 (single bike, you drive; double bike available), or a private fishing charter early in the morning (the captains suggest 6:00 or 7:00).
- Fewer days, same idea: pick one water morning and one cenote or jungle day, and keep the rest free.
Eat & stay
Where to eat and sleep: general tips
We do not recommend specific businesses, but here is how Akumal usually works.
- Eating: there are beachfront restaurants by the bay and simpler places in the town and along the highway. Beachfront is easier and more expensive; a few minutes inland is usually cheaper. Bring a snack for the beach.
- Sleeping: you will find hotels and rentals near the bay, and more options in nearby towns. Staying close to the bay means you can get in the water early, before the crowds.
- Getting here: Akumal is on the highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, so it works as a base for both. See how to get to Akumal.
- Hotel transfers: our meeting point is the 7-Eleven in Akumal, Calle 16. Transfers are arranged only by WhatsApp, so message us first.
Best time
Best time of day, and of the year
Time of day: go in the morning. The water is usually calmer, the beach less crowded and the day is yours afterwards. Midday is when the bay tends to fill up in busy months.
Time of year: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and sargassum (seaweed) varies a lot from year to year and month to month. If you are flexible, check the forecast close to your date. Details in our best time to snorkel in Akumal.
If the bay is closed by the authorities, we reschedule or refund. For tours with the lagoon, we tell you and offer another date or a refund.
What to bring
What to bring to Akumal
- Swimsuit on, towel and dry clothes.
- A UV shirt (rash guard), sunglasses and a cap.
- Cash or a card (lockers at the beach are $100 MXN, card only, on the turtle tours).
- Your own water and a snack.
- Closed shoes for the ATV day (no sandals, flip-flops or Crocs) and comfortable shoes for cenotes.
- Leave at home: sunscreen. No sunscreen goes in the water, not even biodegradable. Use a UV shirt instead; if you are wearing any, rinse it off in the shower before you get in.
- Leave at home: fins. They are not allowed in the bay.
Avoid these
Typical first-timer mistakes
- Arriving at midday: that is when the beach and the water are busiest. Aim for the first slots of the day.
- Wearing sunscreen into the water: it is not allowed on our tours, not even biodegradable, because it harms the reef and the turtles. UV shirt, cap and shade instead.
- Swimming into the buoyed turtle area without a guide: the bay is a federally protected area (CONANP). Our guided hour has an assigned guide, max 6 per guide, a mandatory life jacket and no fins. Read Akumal Bay rules and fees.
- Touching, chasing or feeding turtles: never. Always follow your guide.
- Expecting a guaranteed sighting: turtles are wild. A good guide and a calm morning help, but nobody can promise.
- Forgetting a car for the cenotes: the Dos Ojos and 3-cenote tours need your own car or private transport.
- Booking last minute without checking: you can book up to 1 hour before departure, but pick a time you can really make. Arrive 15 minutes early on the turtle snorkel (grace up to 20 minutes, then the tour is lost with no refund).
