Honest comparison
Akumal vs Xel-Há vs Xcaret: where to swim with turtles
Three great days out on the Riviera Maya, but they are not the same thing. Here is how a natural bay and two big parks compare, and which one fits your trip.
Short answer
The short answer
If your main goal is to swim with sea turtles in open water, Akumal Bay is the place built around it: green turtles live and feed on the seagrass there all year, and you reach them from the beach. Xel-Há and Xcaret are excellent full-day parks with many attractions; turtles are a small part of what they offer, and their water is designed and managed as a park.
We run tours in Akumal, so we are not neutral, but we do not think the parks are worse. They are different. The right pick depends on what kind of day you want.
- Want turtles as the main event, a short activity, and a flexible day? Akumal Bay.
- Want a full day of rides, shows, food and many activities for the whole family in one place? Xel-Há or Xcaret.
- Want both? Do turtles in the morning in Akumal and keep the afternoon for a park or a cenote.
Side by side
How they compare
A practical comparison. For park prices we give no figures: they change by date, ticket type (basic, all-inclusive, plus tiers) and how early you buy, so check the official sites (xelha.com, xcaret.com) before deciding.
- Type of experience: Akumal is a natural bay with open sea and a beach. Xel-Há is a natural inlet and cove turned into a water park. Xcaret is a large eco-archaeological theme park with many attractions and shows.
- Turtles: in Akumal the turtles are wild and free in the bay. The parks are more about the whole experience (snorkeling, rivers, animals, shows, culture). If turtles are your priority, check what each park lists for the date you go.
- Crowds: parks are built to receive thousands of visitors and manage them with schedules and zones. In Akumal the number of swimmers is regulated, and guided groups are small (max 6 per guide with us). Busy days exist in all three.
- Time needed: a park is a full day, usually most of the opening hours. Turtle snorkeling in Akumal is about 1 h 30 in total (1 hour in the water with us), so the rest of your day is free.
- Families: parks are strong for mixed ages, with food, shade and many things to do. In Akumal, kids from 3 pay a child rate and babies 0 to 2 are free with us, with a life jacket and an adult 18+; swimming basics are needed.
- Predictability: in a park you know what the day looks like. In a wild bay nobody can promise a sighting. That is why we search up to 20 more minutes if you have not seen a turtle after the hour.
When to choose each
When each one makes sense
- Choose Akumal when you want a real encounter with wild turtles, you have half a day, you like small guided groups, or you travel without a car (the meeting point is in town).
- Choose Xel-Há when you want a full day in the water with food and drinks included and many activities, and you are happy to spend the day in one place.
- Choose Xcaret when you want culture, shows, animals and nature in one very large park, and you have a full day to give it.
- Combine them if you have several days: a park day and a separate morning for turtles in Akumal.

Make it work
How to plan your days
Mornings are usually calmer in the bay, so an early departure is a good idea. Our turtle snorkel leaves every hour from 9:00 and the hour is confirmed by email. If you also want a park, book the park for another day or start the park after your turtle swim only if the opening hours leave you enough time.
Bring a UV shirt, a towel and dry clothes. Please do not touch, chase or feed the turtles: it protects them and keeps the encounter calm.
