Akumal Bay Guide

Akumal Bay Rules, Fees & Access 2026

The questions people ask and many booking sites skip: do you pay to enter, do you need a guide, what you can do on your own, and what is different with one.

Short answer

The short answer

Akumal Bay is a protected area managed by the federal agency CONANP: it was declared a marine species refuge by decree in 2016. That is why there are rules, buoys and an official wristband. The beach itself is a normal public beach.

Honest summary: you can walk in, swim and snorkel on your own outside the turtle zone. To swim in the buoyed turtle area, public sources say you need an authorized guide, a life jacket and groups of up to 6 per guide. Rules in this bay have changed several times, so always confirm on the day.

Fees

Does it cost to enter Akumal Bay?

Walking onto the public beach is not the same as entering the protected snorkel area. Sources online disagree on the amount of the access fee and the wristband (we have seen different figures), and we could not find a 2026 official price list. So we will not quote a number for independent visitors: ask for the current amount at the entrance.

On our tour you do not deal with this: the official beach entrance and the federal CONANP wristband are included in the price, together with life jacket and sanitised mask.

  • Included in our tour: official beach entrance, CONANP wristband, guide, life jacket, sanitised mask, new snorkel (yours to keep), restrooms and showers.
  • Not included: parking on the group tour ($100 MXN, cash), locker ($100 MXN, card only), food, drinks, towel and photos (optional, ask the guide).
  • Private tour: parking is included.

Guide or not

Do I need a guide? Can I snorkel on my own?

What you can do alone: swim and snorkel outside the buoys, in the bay, with a life jacket if you are not a confident swimmer. There are fewer turtles there, because they feed mostly inside the protected circuits.

What needs a guide: swimming in the buoyed turtle zone. According to public sources, it needs an authorized guide and groups of up to 6 swimmers per guide, and inspectors do check.

Why we think a guide is better, without exaggerating: the guide knows where the turtles are that day, how far to stay, and how to keep you in the permitted area. You spend your hour looking at turtles, not figuring out rules. It is not magic: turtles are wild, so nobody can promise a sighting.

Equipment

Life jacket, fins and sunscreen

  • Life jacket: mandatory on our tour for everyone. Public sources describe it as required in the turtle zone, and it must stop you from fully submerging. Waist belts and arm floats are not the same.
  • Fins: not allowed on our tour, to protect the seagrass that the turtles eat. Other sources were not clear, so ask if you go on your own.
  • Sunscreen: none when you enter the water on our tour, not even biodegradable, nor tanning oil or repellent. If you already have some on, rinse it off in the shower. A UV shirt is the best option.
  • Turtles: do not touch, chase or feed them. Keep your distance and always follow the guide.
  • Swimming level: basic swimming skills, or feeling comfortable floating with a vest where you cannot touch the bottom.

Schedule

Hours, parking and lockers

We do not publish general hours of the protected area because the sources we found do not agree; confirm them on the day. For our tour, these are the real data:

  • Departures: every hour from 9:00 to 15:00. Arrive 15 minutes early; maximum tolerance is 20 minutes. Exit from the water at 17:30 at the latest.
  • Meeting point: 7-Eleven Akumal, Calle 16.
  • Parking: next to the meeting point, 9:00 to 21:00 (access from 8:45). $100 MXN cash on the group tour, included in the private tour.
  • Lockers, restrooms and showers: locker $100 MXN card only; everything closes at 17:30.

Fines

Fines and enforcement

The bay is inspected, and an unguided swimmer inside the protected circuits can be stopped. We could not verify any official fine amounts, so we do not quote them. If you are in doubt, ask the guide or CONANP staff before you get in the water.
