Boat Guide
Private Boat & Boat Tours in Akumal
We run two real boat trips from Akumal, both private and priced per boat for up to 6 people: turtles + Yal-Kú lagoon, or a private fishing charter. Here is how to choose.
What we offer
Two private boat trips in Akumal, side by side
If you are searching for a private boat charter, a boat rental or a boat cruise in Akumal, this is the honest picture. We do not run big group cruises, sunset cruises or yachts. What we run are two private boats with a captain, for your group only, up to 6 passengers (children and babies count). The price is per boat, not per person, and you do not need to fill it.
Both boats leave from the same meeting point (7-Eleven Akumal, Calle 16). Everything is booked and paid online, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
- Turtles + Yal-Kú by private boat: a snorkeling cruise. Yal-Kú lagoon by sea first, then 1 hour swimming with sea turtles in Akumal Bay. 2 h 45 in total. $448 per boat.
- Private fishing charter: 3, 4 or 5 hours with captain and mate, gear, bait and permits included. From $302 per boat.
Snorkeling cruise
Turtles + Yal-Kú by private boat
This is the one to pick if you want a boat cruise with snorkeling. You sail with a captain and a certified guide in the water, snorkel at Yal-Kú lagoon, and then spend an hour swimming with the sea turtles of Akumal Bay.
It leaves at 9:00 (back around 11:45) or 14:25 (back around 17:10). We confirm your arrival time by email when you book, and there is 30 minutes of grace: any delay comes off the trip.
- Price: $448 for the whole boat, up to 6 people. 400 € in Europe. No per-person price.
- Included: private boat, captain and certified guide, guided snorkeling at Yal-Kú, 1 hour guided swim with turtles, Akumal entry and fees, life jacket, mask and a new snorkel to keep, water or soda per person, cooler with ice, complimentary photos and videos when conditions allow, restrooms and showers before 17:30.
- Sighting guarantee: if you have not seen turtles after the hour, the guide keeps looking for up to 20 extra minutes. Turtles are wild, so nobody can promise a sighting.
- Not included: hotel transport, beach locker ($100 MXN, card only), food, tips. You can bring your own drinks, alcohol too, for the cooler.
- Good to know: no minimum age (all kids with an adult 18+ and a life jacket). Basic swimming skills needed. Fins are not allowed in the bay. No sunscreen in the water, not even biodegradable.
Fishing charter
Private fishing charter: 3, 4 or 5 hours
The fishing boat is also a private boat for up to 6 people, a good fit if you want time on the open water without swimming. Captain and mate set up the rods, reels and bait, you do not need any experience, and your catch is cleaned and filleted.
Departures are every hour from 6:00 to 15:00. Arrive 30 minutes early (5:30 for a 6:00 departure). The captains recommend leaving at 6:00 or 7:00. Last departures: 15:00 for 3 h, 14:00 for 4 h, 13:00 for 5 h.
- 3 hours: $302 per boat.
- 4 hours: $403 per boat.
- 5 hours: $503 per boat.
- Included: private boat, captain and mate, rods, reels, tackle and bait, fishing licenses and permits, life jackets, water or soda per person, cooler with ice, cleaning and filleting of your catch, restrooms on return and showers until 17:30.
- What you can catch: depending on the season, marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi and wahoo. No catch or species is guaranteed.
- Not included: hotel transport, food and snacks, towel and lockers, tips, and having a restaurant cook your fish (arrange that with the restaurant).
Which one?
Which boat to choose for your group
- Families with kids or babies, snorkelers, first-time sea travelers: turtles + Yal-Kú. About 3 hours, calm and guided, and turtles are the highlight.
- Anglers, or groups who prefer to stay dry: the fishing charter. No swimming level needed. Welcome with kids too, with an adult 18+ and a life jacket in their size.
- A full morning on the sea: a 4 or 5 hour fishing charter. If you only have a short window, the 3-hour option or the 2 h 45 snorkeling trip.
- Prone to seasickness: if you plan to take medication, check with a health professional first (fishing goes further offshore).
- Looking for a sunset cruise, a yacht or a party boat? We do not offer those. The late turtles + Yal-Kú departure (14:25) ends around 17:10, so it is an afternoon trip, not a sunset cruise.
- Looking for a cheaper way into the water? The turtle snorkel is a walk-in group tour from the beach, with no boat.
