How to Get to Akumal, Mexico — Every Transport Option Explained

Akumal sits between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the Riviera Maya — one of the most accessible snorkel destinations on Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Location

Where is Akumal?

Akumal is a small village on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, located along Federal Highway 307 — the main road connecting Cancún to Tulum. It sits approximately 100 km south of Cancún International Airport, 40 km south of Playa del Carmen, and 25 km north of Tulum.

The village is accessible directly off Highway 307. There is a clearly marked turn-off for "Akumal" — look for the pedestrian bridge over the highway. The beach and snorkel area are a 5–10 minute walk from the highway entrance.

Ask for "Akumal" — fare from PDC is approximately 35–40 MXN (~$2 USD). Total time: ~2 hours.

Arrival Tips

What to know when you arrive in Akumal for the first time

Akumal is a small, quiet village — and that is precisely what makes it special. Here is what to expect when you step off the colectivo or park your rental car.

The pedestrian underpass: Highway 307 runs through the middle of the region. Akumal has a dedicated pedestrian underpass (paso peatonal) that connects the highway to the village and beach. Colectivos will drop you off on the highway at the "Akumal" sign — walk through the underpass and you emerge directly onto the main access road, with the beach 5 minutes ahead.

Beach entrance and CONANP registration: The main entrance to Akumal Beach has a small fee collection point operated by the local dive association and CONANP-certified guides. Independent snorkellers must pay an entry fee and rent a life jacket here. If you are on a booked Akbay Tours tour, skip the line — Xarou handles all registration and equipment for his group.

Parking: If you drive, there is paid parking in a small lot near the beach entrance (approximately 100–150 MXN per day). Spaces are limited — arrive early. Some visitors park on the highway service road and walk through the underpass.

What to have with you: Pesos for the colectivo and any beach vendor purchases (card readers are not always available), water (beach vendors charge higher prices), and your tour confirmation if you have pre-booked.

Day Trip Planning

Planning a day trip to Akumal from Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum

Akumal is perfectly suited to a day trip from any of the main Riviera Maya bases. Here is how to structure your day to get the most out of it.

From Cancún (100 km): Leave your hotel by 7:30 am. Take the ADO bus or shared shuttle — travel time is 1h 15min to 1h 30min. Arrive by 9:00 am for the first snorkel tour. After the tour (done by 11:00–11:30 am), have lunch at one of Akumal's beachfront restaurants, then take the colectivo back north. You are in Cancún by 2:00–3:00 pm with the full afternoon free.

From Playa del Carmen (40 km): The easiest day trip on the coast. Leave at 8:00 am by colectivo, arrive by 8:45 am. Snorkel tour at 9:00 am, lunch on the beach, back in Playa by early afternoon. Budget travellers can complete the entire day, including transport and tour, for under $60 USD per person.

From Tulum (25 km): The shortest journey. Leave at 8:30 am, arrive by 9:00 am. Consider combining snorkelling at Akumal Bay in the morning with a visit to Yalku Lagoon in the early afternoon — both are covered by separate Akbay Tours packages and can be done as a full Akumal day.

  • Combining Akumal Bay + Yalku Lagoon: Both are in the same small area, 1.5 km apart. Akbay Tours can arrange both tours back-to-back on the same day — snorkel with turtles in the morning, Yalku Lagoon in the early afternoon. Ask Xarou about the combination when booking.
  • Timing tip: Do not arrive after 10:00 am expecting a quiet bay experience. Independent beach access becomes crowded after the tour buses arrive. The quality difference between the 9:00 am and 11:00 am experience is genuinely large.
  • Return transport: Colectivos run all day on Highway 307. Stand at the highway entrance and flag one heading in your direction — they run until around 10:00 pm.

Staying in Akumal

Staying overnight in Akumal — hotels, villas and what to know

Staying overnight in Akumal transforms the experience. When the tour buses leave at 4:00 pm, the village returns to the quiet Caribbean pace it has always had. Morning snorkellers who stay locally can be in the water by 8:30 am — before any day-tripper bus has left Cancún.

Accommodation type: Akumal has no large resort hotels — the village is intentionally kept low-key. Options range from simple posadas and guesthouses in the village to private beach villas and mid-range hotels just off the beach. Most are booked directly or through vacation rental platforms.

Recommended area to stay: The main Akumal village (around the beach) gives walking-distance access to the snorkel area and all tours. Half Moon Bay (just north of the main beach) is quieter and closer to Yalku Lagoon.

Restaurants: Akumal has a small selection of excellent seafood restaurants serving fresh fish — including the option of bringing your own fishing charter catch to be prepared.
